My Experiences With Sai Baba

In 1971, while meditating in a New Zealand ashram, I had a vision of someone who turned out to be Sathya Sai Baba. The vision was accompanied by the most beautiful fragrance in the air.

Since I had not heard of Sai Baba nor seen any photos of him, I had no idea who he was.

The next day, I had a phone call from a man who introduced himself as Peter saying he had a film that he thought I should see. I had not heard of Peter before and arranged for him to visit the ashram the next day with his film, which turned out to be a film about Sai Baba.

Peter had recently returned from a visit to India and had spent time with this Indian Holy man.

Of course, these two events were more than enough for me to decide to head off to India and find Sai Baba.

The first time I walked through the gates of his ashram, it was late at night after a long and mind/body numbing bus trip. What I experienced in his ashram was this unbelievable stillness - my first experience with the inner stillness. It was as if you could reach out and gather it in your hands, that’s how real it felt.

When I first saw Sai Baba in person the next day, I quickly realised that the stillness was coming from him.

He was short in physical stature, yet huge in energetic stature.

During my first visit (I also returned a few years later) I came to know for the first time that the thing that I was searching for was not in another person or teacher. I already had it in me. All I had to do was believe that, go within and rediscover it.

That’s what Sai Baba helped me to know and I thank him for that.

During the following years, many stories, some rather disturbing, have emerged around and about Sai Baba. Whether these are factual or otherwise, I cannot say. All I know is the experiences that I had changed my life.

If people would only comment on what they experience directly and leave alone what they only hear about, our planet would truly be a happier place.

Happy travelling,
